Coordination-addition polymerization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002562

A coordination polymerization of alpha,beta-unsaturated esters or amides, such as methacrylates, in which each growth step is the coordination of the monomer to a metal center followed by Michael-type addition of the metal-bound enolate chain end to it. Lanthanocene and other early-metal catalysts that polymerize methyl methacrylate this way can give stereoregular poly(methyl methacrylate) of narrow dispersity. It differs from coordination-insertion polymerization of olefins, where the monomer inserts into a metal-carbon bond.
