Group-transfer polymerization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005041
A chain polymerization in which a silyl or similar atom group passes from the growing chain end to the incoming monomer in every propagation step, so it stays attached to the active end as the chain lengthens. The best-known case is the polymerization of methacrylates such as methyl methacrylate, started by a silyl ketene acetal and driven by a nucleophilic catalyst. It was developed at DuPont in the early 1980s.
