Sorptive insertion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011063
A surface reaction in which a gaseous molecule inserts directly into the bond between the surface and an adsorbed species, forming a new adsorbed species, in analogy with migratory insertion of a ligand in coordination chemistry. An example is gaseous ethene reacting with a surface-bound hydrogen atom to give an adsorbed ethyl group. The same product can also arise by ethene adsorbing first and then undergoing ligand migration.
