Air-lift bioreactor
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000360
A type of bioreactor that uses rising air bubbles to circulate and mix the culture medium, providing oxygen and nutrients to microorganisms or cells. It consists of a column with a draft tube, where air is sparged at the bottom, creating a density difference that drives circulation. This design offers good mixing and mass transfer with low shear stress, making it suitable for shear-sensitive cultures.
