Amalgam lamp

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000467

A type of low-pressure mercury-vapor lamp containing a mercury amalgam, which is an alloy of mercury with another metal such as indium or bismuth. The amalgam stabilizes the mercury vapor pressure over a wider range of operating temperatures compared to lamps using pure mercury. This results in a more constant ultraviolet (UV) light output, with characteristic emission lines at 184.9 nm and 253.7 nm.
