Amniocentesis

A prenatal diagnostic procedure in which a small amount of amniotic fluid is withdrawn from the amniotic sac surrounding a developing fetus. The fluid contains fetal cells and proteins, which are analyzed to detect chromosomal abnormalities, genetic disorders, and neural tube defects. This procedure is generally performed between the 15th and 20th weeks of gestation.
