Amorphous material transmitting infrared radiation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000504

A non-crystalline glass composed of elements from groups 14, 15 and 16, such as germanium, arsenic and selenium, that transmits infrared radiation. These chalcogenide glasses are hard but brittle and are cut into windows, lenses and attenuated total reflection elements for infrared spectroscopy. A common example is the glass sold as AMTIR-1, with composition Ge33As12Se55.
