anti-Stokes Raman scattering

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000713

A type of inelastic light scattering where the scattered photon gains energy from the molecule, resulting in a higher frequency than the incident photon. This occurs when the molecule is initially in an excited vibrational state and relaxes to a lower state during the scattering process. The intensity of anti-Stokes Raman scattering is generally weaker than Stokes Raman scattering because fewer molecules are in excited vibrational states at thermal equilibrium.
