Antihistamine

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000688

A drug that counteracts the effects of histamine, a substance released by the body during allergic reactions. These compounds act by blocking histamine from binding to its receptors on nerve endings, smooth muscle, and gland cells. First-generation antihistamines like diphenhydramine cross the blood-brain barrier and cause sedation, whereas second-generation agents like loratadine do not.
