A paracrine agonist, meaning a signalling molecule that is released by one cell, diffuses through the surrounding intercellular fluid and activates receptors on neighbouring cells. Histamine released by mast cells acting on nearby smooth muscle and endothelial cells is an example. The effect stays local because the molecule is diluted or broken down quickly as it moves away from its source.
