Apneusis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000735
A prolonged inspiratory gasp followed by a short, insufficient expiration. This abnormal breathing pattern results from damage to the pons, a part of the brainstem, which disrupts the normal rhythmic control of respiration. It is characterized by a sustained inhalation, often with a pause at full inspiration, before a brief exhalation.
