Bicycle rearrangement
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012921
A photochemical rearrangement of unsaturated molecules in which a group migrates over the perimeter of a pi system, in a motion likened to the turning of a bicycle pedal. The name describes this migration pattern, not a bicyclic structure of the substrate. It is distinct from the bicycle-pedal mechanism, a separate proposal for the photoisomerization of conjugated double bonds.
