photo-Claisen rearrangement

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008828

A photochemical reaction that is analogous to the thermal Claisen rearrangement, involving the light-induced migration of an allyl group from an oxygen or nitrogen atom to an adjacent carbon atom of an aromatic ring. This process typically proceeds through a radical mechanism, differing from the concerted pericyclic pathway of its thermal counterpart. It is observed in allyl aryl ethers and related compounds.
