photo-Bergman cyclization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008806

A photochemical reaction involving an enediyne derivative that, upon irradiation, undergoes an intramolecular cyclization to form a 1,4-benzenediyl diradical. This highly reactive intermediate can then abstract hydrogen atoms from suitable donors. The reaction is a light-induced variant of the thermal Bergman cyclization and is relevant in the mechanism of certain antitumor antibiotics.
