Cerimetric titration

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012961

A redox titration that uses a standardized cerium(IV) solution, such as cerium(IV) sulfate or ammonium cerium(IV) nitrate, to oxidize the analyte, with yellow cerium(IV) reduced to colorless cerium(III). The end point is signalled by an internal redox indicator such as ferroin, the iron(II)-1,10-phenanthroline complex, which turns from red to pale blue when the first excess of cerium(IV) oxidizes it. The formal potential of the Ce(IV)/Ce(III) couple in 1 M sulfuric acid is about +1.44 V.
