Chain copolymerisation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001836

A chain polymerization in which two or more monomers are built into the same polymer chains, giving a copolymer. The monomers compete for the active centre, so the order of units follows their relative reactivities, expressed as reactivity ratios, and the result is statistical, alternating or blocky, with true block copolymers needing monomers fed one after another. The free-radical copolymerization of styrene with maleic anhydride gives a nearly alternating copolymer.
