Chain-extended crystal
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001855
A polymer crystal in which the lamella is about as thick as the full contour length of its chains, so each macromolecule is stretched across the crystal with at most a few folds. Such crystals form by crystallization under high pressure, for example polyethylene held at several kilobars at elevated temperature, or by solid-state polymerization of a monomer crystal. Lamellar thickness can reach the micrometre scale, against roughly 10 to 20 nanometres for ordinary folded-chain crystals.
