Extended-chain crystal

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004260

A crystal of a polymer whose chains are stretched out almost completely, running straight through the crystal instead of folding back at the lamellar surfaces. Such crystals grow when polyethylene crystallizes under several kilobars of pressure, or when oriented flow stretches the chains, as in gel-spun fibers. Gel-spun ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fibers reach tensile moduli above 100 GPa.
