Community conditioning hypothesis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002285

A hypothesis suggesting that the long-term exposure of a biological community to a particular stressor, such as a pollutant, can lead to adaptive changes in its structure and function. This conditioning may result in increased tolerance or resistance to the stressor within the community over time. The hypothesis implies that past environmental conditions can influence the current response of an ecosystem to disturbances.
