Pollution-induced community tolerance

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009089

An increase in the tolerance of a biological community to a pollutant after exposure to it, shown by tests in which the exposed community survives or functions at concentrations that harm a reference community. The rise in tolerance comes from acclimatisation of individuals, genetic adaptation within populations, and replacement of sensitive species by tolerant ones. It is detected with short-term toxicity tests comparing exposed and unexposed communities, such as periphyton or bacterial assemblages.
