Pollution tolerance index

A numerical value assigned to a species or community indicating its ability to withstand or thrive in polluted environments. This index is used in ecological assessments to evaluate the health of an ecosystem based on the presence and abundance of tolerant or sensitive organisms. A higher index value indicates greater tolerance to environmental contamination.
