Redundancy hypothesis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010056
A concept in ecology proposing that some species within an ecosystem have overlapping functions, so the loss of one species may not severely impact ecosystem processes if other species can compensate. This hypothesis suggests a degree of functional overlap among species in maintaining ecosystem stability. It contrasts with the rivet hypothesis, which posits that each species has a unique and irreplaceable role.
