Immune reserve hypothesis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005647
A hypothesis in immunotoxicology holding that the immune response has built-in redundancy, so that overlapping effector mechanisms can compensate when one immune function is acutely reduced, for example by a drug or toxicant. A moderate loss of a single function, such as a lowered antibody response, therefore may not by itself raise susceptibility to infection.
