pH-partition hypothesis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008942
A theory explaining the absorption of drugs across biological membranes based on their pKa and the pH of the environment. It posits that only the un-ionized form of a drug, which is more lipid-soluble, can readily cross lipid membranes. Therefore, the extent of absorption is influenced by the degree of ionization, which is determined by the drug's pKa and the local pH.
