Photovoltaic effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008941
The phenomenon where a voltage or electric current is generated in a material upon exposure to light. This occurs when photons are absorbed, exciting electrons to a higher energy state and creating electron-hole pairs that are then separated by an internal electric field. The separated charges accumulate, producing a potential difference across the material, as observed in solar cells.
