Functional redundancy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004717
The capacity of multiple species or components within an ecosystem to perform similar ecological functions. This characteristic means that the loss of one species may not lead to a complete collapse of a particular function if other species can compensate. For example, several decomposer organisms might contribute to nutrient cycling in a soil community.
