Crazing

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002663

A form of localized plastic deformation in glassy polymers characterized by the formation of an intricate network of interconnected microvoids and fibrils. These crazes propagate perpendicular to the applied stress and scatter light, making the material appear opaque. Crazing can precede fracture but also acts as a toughening mechanism by dissipating energy.
