Dianions
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003130
Molecular entities that carry two negative elementary charges. These species result from the gain of two electrons by a neutral molecule or the loss of two protons from a neutral molecule. For example, the sulfate ion (SO4)2− is a common inorganic dianion, while the dianion of fluorescein is responsible for its characteristic green fluorescence under basic conditions.
