Educt

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003577

The reactant, or starting material, of a reaction, in the sense used mainly in German-language chemistry literature. English usage discourages it because there the word suggests something drawn out of a substance rather than put into a reaction, so reactant or starting material is preferred. Even the German usage is regarded as etymologically wrong, since the Latin root means led out, not led in.
