Electromotive force
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003701
The work done per unit of electric charge by a source of energy, such as an electrochemical cell or a changing magnetic field, when moving the charge around a closed circuit. It represents the maximum potential difference between two terminals of a device in the open-circuit condition, meaning when no current is flowing. The electromotive force, symbolized as E or EMF, is measured in volts (V), which is equivalent to joules per coulomb (J⋅C⁻¹).
