Electromigration

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003700

The movement of ions in a solid material caused by the momentum transfer from conducting electrons under the influence of an applied electric field. This phenomenon is distinct from electrophoresis, which occurs in fluids, and from simple ionic conduction. In microelectronics, electromigration can cause the gradual displacement of atoms in a conductor, leading to the formation of voids and eventual circuit failure.
