Potentiometer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009323

An instrument that measures an electromotive force (voltage) by balancing it against a known potential difference, drawing negligible current from the circuit under test. This high internal impedance allows for the accurate determination of cell potentials in electrochemical systems without disturbing the equilibrium of the system being measured. In environmental chemistry, it is frequently used with ion-selective electrodes to measure quantities such as pH or the concentration of specific ions in aqueous solutions.
