Electronic energy migration

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003753

Transfer of electronic excitation between identical or like units, as when the excitation hops among the chromophores of an aromatic polymer or between molecules of one species. Migration proceeds by radiative reabsorption or by radiationless pathways such as dipole-dipole or exchange coupling, and the excitation may hop many times before it decays. When the energy passes between different species the process is called electronic energy transfer instead.
