Enantiomeric groups

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003863

A pair of groups, each chiral, that stand to each other as object and mirror image, such as an (R)-substituted and an (S)-substituted fragment. When both occur in one molecule related by a mirror plane or an inversion center, as in meso-tartaric acid, the molecule as a whole is achiral. Enantiotopic atoms or groups, such as the two methylene hydrogens of ethanol, are a related but distinct idea, because they are identical and not themselves chiral.
