Enantiotopic

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003872

Describing atoms or groups of the same constitution that are exchanged only by an improper symmetry operation, namely reflection through a mirror plane, inversion through a center, or a rotation-reflection axis, so that replacing one of them gives one of a pair of enantiomers. Enantiotopic groups are indistinguishable by achiral reagents but are distinguished by chiral reagents, enzymes or solvents. The two hydrogens of the CH2 group in ethanol are an example.
