Diastereotopic

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003140

Describing two identical groups or faces in a molecule that, if replaced or reacted, would lead to diastereoisomers. These groups or faces are chemically non-equivalent and can be distinguished by spectroscopic methods, such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. For example, the two protons on a methylene group adjacent to a chiral center are diastereotopic.
