Prochirality

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009495

A geometric property of an achiral molecule or center that can be converted into a chiral one in a single substitution or addition step. An achiral trigonal planar center with three different attached groups is prochiral because adding a new group creates a chiral tetrahedral center. The two faces of the planar structure are designated 'Re' and 'Si' based on the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog priority rules of the attached groups.
