A prefix used in stereochemistry to denote a compound that is achiral despite containing chiral centers. This occurs when the molecule possesses an internal plane of symmetry or a center of inversion, making it superimposable on its mirror image. Such compounds are optically inactive, meaning they do not rotate plane-polarized light.
