Optical rotatory power
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008278
The ability of a chiral substance to rotate the plane of plane-polarized light as it passes through the substance. This property is quantified by the angle of optical rotation, which depends on the concentration of the chiral compound, the path length of the light, and the wavelength of the light. It is a key characteristic used in stereochemistry to distinguish enantiomers.
