Endocardial cushion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003888
Extracellular matrix-rich swellings that appear in the atrioventricular canal and outflow tract of the developing embryonic heart. These structures, populated by mesenchymal cells, are precursors that remodel and fuse to form the heart's septa and atrioventricular valves. Failure of the endocardial cushions to develop or fuse correctly results in congenital heart defects, such as atrioventricular septal defects.
