Endocrine disruptor

An exogenous chemical or mixture that interferes with the hormone system and, as a consequence, produces adverse health effects in a whole organism, its descendants or groups of exposed individuals. Mechanisms include imitating or blocking a hormone and disturbing its synthesis, transport or breakdown. Phthalates, which soften plastics, form one class of such compounds found in many consumer products.
