Expansion factor
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004222
A dimensionless ratio comparing the size of a polymer coil in a particular solvent with its size in the theta state at the same temperature. The common forms use the end-to-end distance or the radius of gyration, each as the square root of the ratio of its mean-square values, plus a viscosity form that takes the cube root of the intrinsic viscosity ratio. It equals 1 in a theta solvent and exceeds 1 in a good solvent.
