External standardization for quenching correction
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004273
A liquid scintillation counting method for correcting quenching in which a gamma-emitting source is brought next to the sample vial so that it generates Compton electrons in the scintillator. The spectrum of these electrons shifts to lower energy as quenching increases, and a quench-indicating parameter taken from it is related to counting efficiency through a curve prepared from quenched standards of known activity. Sources such as 137Cs or 133Ba are commonly used.
