Extraordinary wave

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004302

A wave of electromagnetic radiation that propagates through an anisotropic medium, such as a birefringent crystal, with a velocity that depends on its direction of propagation and polarization. Its refractive index varies with the direction of propagation. This behavior contrasts with an ordinary wave, which has a constant refractive index regardless of direction.
