Flory-Huggins theory
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004491
A lattice model that describes the thermodynamics of polymer solutions, accounting for the entropy of mixing and the enthalpy of interaction between polymer segments and solvent molecules. It provides a theoretical framework for understanding phase separation and solubility in polymer systems. The theory introduces the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter (χ), which quantifies the energetic preference for polymer-solvent contacts over polymer-polymer and solvent-solvent contacts.
