Fold period

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004562

The thickness of a lamellar polymer crystal measured along the direction of its stems, which equals the length of the straight chain segment between two successive folds. In solution-grown stacked lamellae with chains perpendicular to the lamellar surface it matches the long period from small-angle scattering, whereas in melt-crystallized samples it is shorter because the amorphous layer holds more than folds. It is set by the crystallization temperature.
