Follicular atresia
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004571
The degenerative process by which ovarian follicles, which contain immature eggs, break down and are reabsorbed before reaching full maturity. This natural process occurs continuously throughout a female's reproductive life, leading to the loss of most primordial follicles. It is a major cause of oocyte depletion and contributes to the decline in fertility with age.
