Globule

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004912

A compact, roughly spherical or ovoid conformation of a single macromolecule, in which the constitutional units pack closely instead of forming an open coil. Globules form in dilute solution when the solvent is poor, because attraction between segments outweighs polymer-solvent contacts, and they also occur in folded globular proteins. The change between a globule and an expanded coil is called the coil-to-globule transition, or globule-to-coil in the reverse direction.
