Graft macromolecule

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013134

A branched macromolecule whose side chains are themselves blocks, joined to the main chain at points along its length and different in composition or constitution from it. The backbone and the grafts can be chemically distinct polymers, as in high-impact polystyrene, where polybutadiene forms the backbone and polystyrene the grafts. In a block copolymer, by contrast, the chemically different blocks are joined end to end in the chain itself.
