Grasshopper effect

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005011

A phenomenon describing the long-range atmospheric transport of semi-volatile persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from warmer regions to colder regions through repeated cycles of volatilization and deposition. These compounds evaporate in warmer climates, travel through the atmosphere, and then condense and deposit in colder areas, accumulating in polar environments. This process leads to the global distribution of certain environmental contaminants.
